Welcome, Lovely

My name is Nikki McCahon, I’m a matrescence educator and women’s life cycle guide. I’m also the mum of one charming and feisty five year-old.

If you’re new to the concept of matrescence, you’re not alone. It’s an emerging discipline that captures the physical, psychological, and emotional changes women go through during the monumental transformation that motherhood evokes.

Put simply, matrescence is the process of becoming a mother.

Becoming a mother leaves no woman as it found her; it unravels her and rebuilds her; it cracks her open; takes her to her edges.

It’s both beautiful and brutal, often at the same time.

My
Journey

Being a mother, especially in the first few years, can feel like climbing a mountain in the fog; you have no endpoint in sight. You can’t see a thing, but you know you have to keep moving. You set one foot in front of the other, and trust the path will unfold. But imagine how different that climb would be if you had a guide beside you?

When I became a mother, I experienced intense isolation and loneliness. I had recently moved to a new city and found it difficult to find a community of women to spend time and share experiences with (and believe me, I tried). While I was never physically alone (my son was with me 24/7), it was one of the loneliest times in my life.

It felt like there was so much support for the baby, yet very little support for the mother’s journey. It left me feeling discouraged. I’m certain that the lack of social support was a big contributing factor to the challenges I faced in my early motherhood journey.

A year after my son was born, I started a meet-up community for mothers that grew to over 40,000 members in just three years—it turns out I wasn’t the only one feeling isolated and lonely. The community was acquired by national not for profit the Centre of Perinatal Excellence (COPE) in 2020, becoming a part of their emotional and wellbeing support program for mothers. Knowing that this community helped other women avoid the same struggles I had, was a profoundly healing experience.

My own personal experience, partnered with my reverence for the journey of becoming a mother, led me to the study of matrescence. I have now combined my ten year education with intensive study in matrescence and motherhood support.

My training has included included private matrescence education and mentoring with Dr Aurelie Athan Columbia University, acceptance and commitment therapy with Russ Harris, Rites of Passage study with Jane Hardwicke Collings and the Rites of Passage Institute through to neuroscience study with Dr Sarah McKay, Motherhood Studies (sociology) with Dr Sophie Brock and postpartum doula training with Anna Watts, amongst other self led and facilitated education and training.

I have used my background in education and my in-depth knowledge of matrescence and mother support to create my own unique evidence based models and methods for supporting mothers. I teach these methods and models in my Seasons of Matrescence practitioner certification.

As a leader in the emerging discipline of matrescence, I’m determined to normalise the physical, psychological, and emotional changes women go through during motherhood. As a trained educator and matrescence specialist, I support women through motherhood and teach other motherhood support practitioners how to integrate matrescence support and education into their work.

I truly believe that motherhood is an opportunity to evolve; in fact, it’s one of the ultimate opportunities for personal development and growth. No other experience in my life has forced me to look at the wounds, beliefs, and values I carry and ask myself, 'do these still work for me?' and 'is this the life that I want to have for myself and my family?'. Becoming a mother is a deeply transformative experience.

As mothers we are experiencing a rebirth of sorts; the labour is often painful and confusing. We’re just as vulnerable as a newborn yet we often forget to treat ourselves with the grace, kindness, and reverence we would offer a child.

It takes bravery to leap into the unknown, but I can promise if you are willing to go there, you’ll find something magical.

How can I support you on this expansive soul-shifting journey?
